Raising Awareness About Teen Dating Violence

[published: 10/15/2014] in Dating Violence

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Dating abuse is a major problem, affecting communities everywhere. According to www.teendvmonth.org, nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year. One in three girls in the U.S. is a victim of physical, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence.

Dating violence can happen on a first date or with a regular partner at any time within the relationship. It could be physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. Some dating abuse red flags include alcohol and drug use, feeling isolated, losing friends, extreme jealousy, and not being able to make decisions on your own. A healthy relationship involves trust, respect, support, negotiation, and open communication. It's time to join the movement and take a stand against dating abuse.

If you or someone you know is a victim of dating violence, you can get help. Call EVE, Inc., at (740) 374-5819.
